Deputy Fergus O'Dowd.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD has today announced allocations and targets under the Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Programme for Social Housing including just under €1m to Louth County Council.
Welcoming the announcement local TD, Fergus O’Dowd, said the funding for Louth County Council will be used to retrofit 36 social housing units in the county but, he said “this is welcome news, but we are realistically only scratching the surface.”
“On a daily basis I have social housing residents in direct contact with my office as their homes are completely energy deficient and in many cases the council have to install make shift electric heaters or other temporary measures, which are neither cost efficient or of any benefit to our carbon footprint.
“We are very proud to have the Louth Energy Team based in Dunleer who are leading lights in terms of retrofitting sector and we need to do much more to support such organisations.

“The Programme for Government (PfG) commits to retrofitting 500,000 homes to a B2/Cost Optimal Equivalent BER standard by 2030. It is expected that approximately 36,500 of those will be local authority owned homes.
“There will be a further €10 million made available under this scheme for Local Authorities who demonstrate an ability to complete the additional work and spend the full allocation in 2021 which is certainly a good incentive to get the work commenced and completed as soon as is possible.
“This scheme has helped over 70k household improve their energy efficiency since 2013 but this revised scheme will focus much more on deeper retrofitting.”
